William MacMillan Smith
Resident of San Jose
Nov. 8, 1935 – June 11, 2017
Bill passed away on Sunday June11, 2017 after complications from a stroke and pneumonia. Bill was loved by so many people in his community. He is survived by his wife; Jan, his four children; Mark, Laura (husband Steve Nastrini), Lisa (husband Bill Smith), and Karen (husband Steve Leal), and his eight grandchildren; Sophia, Vanessa, Matthew, Vincent, Emma, Madison, Hailey, and Ashley, who all loved him dearly. He is also remembered by his only sister, Mary Louise Kirby, and his nieces and nephews. He was born in San Jose California and lived on a local orchard with his parents Earnest and Mary Ellen Smith, along with his sister Mary. He graduated from Bellarmine High School, then went on to study at San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and earned a degree in funeral services. Bill worked in this field for 59 years, 57 of them spent at Darling & Fischer as a funeral director, general manager, and Vice President. Bill retired at the age of 75 and then again at the age of 78.
He was a very active member of St. Victor’s Church as a lector, youth minister, and RCIA teacher. He was also a lector at St. Frances of Assisi and the board chairman of their memorial garden. Bill served as a member of Kiwanis Club San Jose and also as president and governor of Serra Club International.
Anyone who met Bill would agree that he was a kind and gentle man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was filled with so much love and compassion, he wanted to spread that to others. He loved his work so much that he retired twice. The only times he would not be working is when he was at his most important job of being a loving husband, father and grandfather. His other passions were traveling with his wife going on various cruises and trips to Hawaii and Europe. He also enjoyed having the occasional cigar with his son and son-in-laws.
He will be greatly missed but we can find some comfort in knowing he will be waiting for us all at heaven’s gate.
