Robert Edward Rae Andrews, Jr
Resident of San Jose, CA, Native of Hawaii
August 23, 1948 - December 4, 2017

Robert (Bob) Andrews passed away on December 4, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. He was a generous and loving person who lit up the room with his presence.

Bob was born August 23, 1948 in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, and graduated from Honolulu Junior Academy, second in his class. Even at a young age, Bob displayed his artistic talents in many ways. He was regularly called upon by his late mother, Sybil Napuoko Bright Andrews, and the Halekulani Girls to create leis and floral hair adornments for their shows as they entertained tourists and locals alike in the 1950's and 1960's.  Bob performed a similar role for his sister Malawaina and the many Tahitian dancers of the Tavana’s Tahitian Revue. He will also be remembered for his hulas learned as a child and danced with his sister Weedy throughout their lives.  Bob’s cooking and baking skills were learned at his late Dad’s side, Robert Sr.  He will be especially remembered for his Teri Beef and Mac Salad at their annual parties and Peanut Butter pies baked just for Dad.

After serving in the Army during the Vietnam conflict, he returned to Hawaii for a short time before moving to the mainland.

He spent much of his early work life in the hospitality business, working at hotels and resorts in Apple Valley and Concord, CA and Chicago, IL. For a time he even managed an ice rink in Bend, Oregon, where his twin daughters Alicia, Natashia, and his former wife Patty (Lucas) live today.

He relocated to San Jose in the 1980's, and worked at a number of high tech companies in shipping and receiving, including Xicor and Silicon Systems.  He met David Nakley in 1991, beginning a relationship that grew stronger with each passing year. They bought a home together and took particular pride in making the garden a showplace.  He and David hosted an annual party in their backyard, enjoyed by many friends and family over the years

Bob leaves behind his husband of 26 years, David Nakley, and his daughters Alicia Puahaunapuoko (Stephen) Samples; Natashia KeahiOkeKuahu Andrews James, of Bend, OR; granddaughters Monika Hokuao Throckmorten-Lucas of San Diego, CA, Kaili Pomaikai Samples, Bend, OR and grandsons Damarea Ikaika Dunnigan and Jaleel Xavier Lopakaekolu James of Portland, OR; Mother, Phoebe KaEhukaiOpuaena Ku Andrews of Aiea, HI; Sisters Andrea Malawaina Martin of Stockton, CA; Weedonette (Weedy) Pomaikai (Skip) Hannibal of Paradise, CA; Kamuela (Brent) Potter of Haleiwa, HI; Nancy Ann (Pat) Tinnell; Ku brothers Jack, Paul (Erika), and Pat (Teri).  He leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins both on the mainland and in Hawaii.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved sisters Wanda Hooulu Bright Andrews Aina, Sybil Kealoha Bright Andrews and brother James Makia Ku Jr.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Bob's life on Saturday, December 16 from 2:30PM to 6 PM, at Darling Fischer Garden Chapel, 471 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose, CA.  Aloha attire is encouraged.
