Obituary of Lan Thi Nguyen
June 12,1950 – July 16, 2021
Lan Thi Nguyen of San Jose entered peacefully into the embrace of God at the age of 71 on July 16, 2021. Warm, social and generous, Lan will be greatly missed by her surviving family and friends.
The third of seven children and second eldest daughter of Nguyen Dinh Chan (d. 2019) and Nguyen Thi Suot (d. 2013), Lan was the first in her family to attend college. She graduated from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan with a BS in Chemistry. This is also where she met her husband Hien Dao.
As newlyweds and fresh college graduates, they immigrated to the US in 1975 to be with her younger brother Thai. She worked as a chemist while raising her two daughters (Kim and Amy), supporting Hien through graduate school, and sponsoring many family members in their journey to immigrate to the US. When her girls were older, she transitioned to her second career as a kindergarten teacher. In 1997, she finished her teaching credential at San Jose State University. She loved teaching young children math and singing songs.
Swimming, traveling, going to the beach, singing with her choir group, volunteering, and making things with her hands (cooking, sewing) brought Lan great pleasure. She loved to host friends and family for meals and special occasions and talk on the phone with relatives and friends afar. Lan was blessed with a fighting spirit, was a three-time cancer survivor, faced challenges with courage and determination, and was always thinking of ways to help others.
Lan is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Hien Dao, two daughters Kim and Amy Dao. She is also survived by her two siblings Thai and Nam Nguyen, and her five beloved grandchildren: Mina, Eli and Olive Dao-Hoang and Etta and Quynh Dao-Barbour. She also leaves behind two uncles, and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the US, Canada, Vietnam and Europe. Lan’s memory will be cherished.
May God bless you, Lan. Rest in Peace.
