Josefina O. Alegre was born on November 26, 1935 in the Philippines. Growing up, she was the second eldest out of four siblings. Josefina was a seamstress and ran her own “sari-sari” / small convenient store to support her husband, Ciariaco, in providing for her five children. Josefina was a dedicated and loving mother to Sonia, Jose (Boy), Leonora, Veronica, and Filomena. With Ciriaco’s and Josefina’s hard work, they were proud to provide their children with the education and resources they needed to thrive in their future.
In 1984, Josefina, her husband, and her youngest daughter (Filomena) began their journey to the United States. Together they immigrated and resided in San Jose, CA. Josefina continued to work hard and provide for her entire family as an assembler in one of the electronic companies in San Jose. After 20 years in the company, she decided to take part-time retirement and continued to work in San Jose Airport while taking care of her two grandchildren, Justin and Clarissa. After a year, she enjoyed her days taking care of her grandchildren, while her youngest daughter, Filomena, and son-in-law, Jose, were at work. Every December, Josefina and her husband visited the Philippines to see their other children and grandchildren. In 2009, Josefina’s husband of 53 years, Ciriaco, passed away. Since then, Josefina remained strong and present for her family.
In 2013, Josefina was diagnosed with early stages of dementia, which slowly progressed over the years. Josefina’s youngest daughter, Filomena, and son-in-law, Jose, dedicated their time as caregivers to their loving mother. Despite the diagnosis, Josefina continued to live life full of joy and laughter. In January 2020, her dementia became severe and her overall health quickly declined. She continued to smile through it all, even through the pain. She was surrounded by love and support until her last breath, on March 19, 2020 at 11:34pm. Josefina’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her other loved ones will continue to celebrate her life and remember the warmth of her bright smile.
