Jose Garcia Da Rosa, mostly known as Jose Barata, was born in
Espalhafatos, Faial, Azores on August 8, 1942 to Manuel Garcia Da Rosa and
Maria da Gloria Bulcao. He was the youngest of nine siblings. He married his
school sweetheart, the love of his life, Maria Deolinda Machado in 1962 at
the age of 19. A year later their first child was born and a month later he was
drafted in the Portuguese army where he served in Terceira and Faial for 30
months. During this time three more children were born.
In December of 1967, Jose and his loving wife and children left the Azores
Islands and moved to San Jose, California for a better future. Immediately he
started working for his brother-in-law Augustine Machado’s landscaping
business. Within two years his last two children were born. In 1977 he began
working at Independence High School in San Jose as a gardener and retired
in 2004 after 27 years of service.
Retirement gave him more time to tend to his many fruit trees which always
produced an abundance of fruit to share with family, friends, neighbors and
the homeless. Most days you could find him at the local flea market getting
his exercise walking while looking for treasures such as garden statuary
which he would paint and restore, and this kept him very active and busy.
Dad had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh with his
silly jokes and pranks. His passion was watching soccer on tv and playing
dominoes with family. He loved The Lord very much and was a man of great
faith. He was taken from us too soon due to complications from cancer at
Kaiser Santa Clara surrounded by his loving wife and children on August 28,
2021. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great
grandfather. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years Maria Deolinda;
six children: Maria Fatima (Phil), Jose, Amy (Blake), Tomas, Fernando, Connie
four great grandchildren;
three siblings: Evagelina, Regina, and Manuel Pedro (Teresa)
