Evelyn Ann HeagertyDecember 27, 1930 ~ April 10, 2018 (age 87)
Evelyn passed away April 10, 2018 from complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 87 years old. Born at home, December 27, 1930, to Mary Wolf Pestoni and Amile “Jack” Pestoni, in St. Helena, CA, she was nicknamed “Tiny.” Evelyn was the last surviving member of the three Pestoni children.
Evelyn attended St. Helena public schools, graduating from St. Helena High School in 1948. She had an early interest in sports, becoming a lifelong fan of Bay Area baseball and football teams. A fine athlete herself, she played (before Title IX) a wide variety of sports and games, including golf, tennis, and softball, well into later adulthood. She was an avid supporter of her children’s sporting activities.
Evelyn attended Napa Junior College before she was accepted to Merritt College of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse in 1952. Concurrently, she became a flight attendant with United Airlines. Good things happen in threes: at the same time, mutual friends, Will & Clarisse Tiesiera, introduced Evelyn to the love of her life, David “Dave” Heagerty, whom she married in 1953, following a whirlwind romance. Prior to that fortuitous introduction, Evelyn had volunteered as nurse for Dave’s semi-pro football team, the Oakland Owls.
After their marriage in St. Helena, a bevy of five children arrived for the Heagerty family over nearly sixteen years: Mae Ann, in 1954, David James, 1956, Patricia “Trish” Alice,1958, George Arthur, 1962, and Sheila Amelia, 1970.
Dave’s work took the burgeoning family to Pittsburgh, PA, shortly before Trish was born, and on to Chicago until 1962, when Dave accepted an offer to become partner with his cousin George Coakley in a growing advertising/PR agency in San Jose. Evelyn and the family moved to San Jose after Dave joined Coakley-Heagerty. That was shortly before George was born. Moving again, in 1963, Evelyn raised her family over the next 30 years at their 1 acre spread in Saratoga. Lots of good times. Evelyn & Dave relocated in1994 to the Rosegarden area of San Jose, becoming the first residents in the new Rosegarden development, and lived there until after Evelyn was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s in 2006. In 2008, Evelyn & Dave moved to The Forum at Rancho San Antonio, Cupertino.
While Evelyn’s primary role was mother and homemaker, she worked for several firms during the family’s years in Saratoga; for a short time, she was a partner in two successful small businesses, a second-hand store and a printing business. She was an outstanding cook, who used her Northern Italian (Piedmonte) heritage and St. Helena wine country-bred skills to their fullest, Evelyn was the perfect hostess for frequent parties and family gatherings at their home in Saratoga, 12951 Paramount Drive. You did not turn down an invitation to join the Heagertys for an afternoon on the backyard patio or an evening of great food, drinks and companionship.
Evelyn was very active in Catholic Church activities and groups, including at her Sacred Heart Parish, Saratoga, and with Sacred Heart Community Center, San Jose. Evelyn spent many years as a volunteer at Martha’s Kitchen, San Jose. She volunteered extensively at Our Lady of Fatima Villa, Saratoga, senior center. In 2012 it was her turn; Evelyn spent the remaining six years of her life under the loving care of “The Villa,” as she was progressively consumed by irrevocable dementia disease.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her brother Eugene “Gene” Pestoni, her sister Alice Pestoni Martinelli (Don), her aunt Florence Wolf and grandson Jordan Harris. Evelyn’s husband of 63 years, Dave, died in July 2016. She is survived by her sister-in-law Edina Heagerty Nelson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Toni Heagerty, all five of her children — Mae Heagerty Matos (Mike), David Heagerty (Kim), Trish Garrison, George Heagerty and Sheila Heagerty, 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
