March 4, 1928 ~ September 18, 2022 (age 94)

Constance (Connie) Cecilia Rodrigues Freitas

Constance (Connie) Cecilia Rodrigues Freitas passed away peacefully on September 18, 2022.  Born on March 4, 1928 in Newport, Rhode Island, she was the fourth of nine children of Joseph and Rose Rodrigues.  Her favorite story about her birth was that she was so small her dad was able to carry her around in a shoe box.  She was raised on her family’s farm in Middleton, Rhode Island.

At age 21, she moved with her family to California, settling in San Jose.  She shared driving the family car across country with her dad.  Eager to explore California, Connie found work at the Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco and moved to an apartment close by.  She missed her family and moved back to San Jose where she met the love of her life, Arthur Freitas, through their siblings.  Connie’s brother was dating Art’s sister. After a brief courtship, Art and Connie married on February 20, 1954.

Connie and Art raised six children and she spent the early years of her marriage working as a homemaker and bookkeeper for Art’s gas station business.  Connie was a talented seamstress and sewed clothes for her children including her daughter Carol’s wedding dress.  She was skilled and ambitious as she helped to paint their house inside and outside, canned fresh fruit from the backyard trees, decorated cakes, crocheted blankets and repaired and created home décor

Favorite family outings included the local swim club, day trips to the beach, as well vacations in Lake Tahoe and camping at Bass Lake, Yosemite, and State Beaches.  Connie and Art often went fishing where Connie many times was the one to catch a fish. After raising their family, they were able to experience travel to Alaska, Hawaii, Portugal and the Azores.  Connie and Art were active members of the St. John Vianney Parish for over 50 years and were members of the Cabrillo Civic Club.  A regular highlight was their Pedro card game nights with friends as well as their group beach barbecue outings.

Connie was highly motivated to complete her education.  She earned her high school Diploma in 1966, as she was unable to finish high school in Rhode Island due to a severe case of appendicitis. She went on to complete her Associate Degree.

In 1969, Connie started working for Bank of America.  She worked for ten years, first as a bank teller and then as a loan officer.  After the bank, Connie worked for Ponderosa Homes for four years as their in-house loan officer.  Next, she became a licensed realtor after completing the education and certification requirements.  She was a realtor for Century 21 and ReMax before retiring in the early 90’s.

As an avid collector of family genealogy information, Connie became quite an expert on research.   She appreciated meeting newly discovered relatives and took pride in gathering pictures and updating family documentation.

Connie loved her children and grandchildren.  She had a special touch with them, especially the babies.  She was always eager to babysit her grandkids and spend time with them.  Connie enjoyed hosting the family holiday dinners and was known to have chocolate chip cookies in the cookie jar when you visited.

Connie is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Arthur Freitas.   She is survived by Judy Calado, Patty (Dan) Medaglia, David (Alysa) Freitas, Bob (Nora) Freitas, Carol Woods and James (Nancy) Freitas. She was a devoted grandmother of 14 and a great grandmother of 9. She also is survived by her siblings Arthur (Angie) Rodrigues and Anna (Bob) Grindstaff.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bellerose in San Jose and Vitas Hospice for their loving care the last two years.
