Darling & Fischer Mortuaries was founded in 1931 by Rev. Roger Darling, with Darling Funeral Home on the corner of 10th and Santa Clara Streets in San Jose, California. Clyde Fischer purchased the funeral home from Rev. Darling, and Darling Funeral Home became Darling & Fischer Garden Chapel. Clyde was an active member of the community, serving as mayor of San Jose from 1932-1937 and on the city council in the 1960s. Clyde was instrumental in establishing Hands Across the Border, which provides school and medical supplies to Mexico. He adopted the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Mexicali, Mexico and provided funding and supplies for many years.
Clyde's son Jack joined the business in 1944. They expanded the family business by opening the Memorial Chapel in downtown Campbell in 1953 and Chapel of the Hills in downtown Los Gatos in 1954. In 1978, they purchased Los Gatos Memorial Park to provide burial and cremation options for the community. Jack Fischer's son, Jeff, joined the business in 1976 after graduating from Cal Poly. Jeff continued the family tradition of community involvement and serves on the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Hospital, the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Evergreen School District.
In 1998, Darling & Fischer merged with Carriage Services of California to provide added value to the families we serve. The Fischer family continues to be active in the business and community.
