Richard Manuel Katen

August 29, 1934 ~ September 12, 2017 (age 83)

Richard Manuel Katen Senior started out in his younger
days working around the family dairy on King Rd, San
Jose with his siblings. He attended school at Roosevelt.
After his schooling, he enlisted in the army in 1958 at Fort
Ord. He was sent to Fort Lewis in Washington for basic.
After Graduation from basic he took a tour to Germany.
Shortly after his return from his duty to his country he
married to Joyce Vieira, and went to work for Joe Muller
and George Terradilini on weekdays at the Story Rd Drive
in dairy, on weekends he would milk cows for his good
friend Eddie Cabrael in between playing cards and social- izing.
While with Joyce they had 3 children together, Richard
Jr, Robert & Patsy Katen. After a short term marriage
Richard was introduced to Linda Silva. After a 4 Year
courtship they were united in marriage. At that point
Richard stepped in as a father to Linda’s 3 children Larry,
Robert & Wayne Silva.
He raised Linda’s 3 children as if they were his own. In
1975 having raised Wayne since 4 weeks old decides to
give Wayne his last name.
In 1965 Richard went to work building fences at San
Jose Steel. He was also in the iron Workers Union.
After a short time of employment there he was moved
up to foreman towards the end of 1966.
He went on to become a master in his trade, where he
was highly respected by his peers and worked until they
shut down the installation department at which time he
started working for steel fence systems, until his retirement
in August of 1996.
Richard & Linda along with her sister Bella and Chuck
were successful bar owners of Patty’s Inn through the mid
80s, upon which time they sold it to focus on the family
future.
He loved watching his children race sprint cars. He was
an avid Jimmy Johnson Nas Car fan, he was proud of his
sons & daughter being involved in the sport of Rodeo. He
loved the 49ers S.F Giants & Oakland A’s. He attended
many ball games with his brother & family.
He passed peacefully in his home with his sons & family
by his side.
He is survived by his two brothers Lenard and William
and sister Virginia and their family members.
Also survived by his five sons Larry Silva, Robert Silva
and his wife Jody, Richard Katen Jr, Robert Katen and his
wife Melanie & Wayne Katen and his wife Kim.
Also survived by his grandchildren, Larry Silva Jr, Candice
Silva and Sierra Silva, Chrissy Silva, Jade Ynzunza Katen,
Coleman Katen, Carson Katen and Caleb Katen, Janelle
Katen, Jennifer Katen, Michael Twitchell, Amilia Katen,
Melanie Katen , and also his great grand children Larry
Silva the 3rd, Lexi Silva, Drew Sheridan & Allisa Sheridan,
Sienna Holly, Austin Matos, Cali Silva & Hunter Silva and
Myrene Katen Deal & Jackson Katen Deal.
He has joined his wife Linda Katen & his Daughter Patsy
Katen along with many other family members
