Mary Ann Silva of San Jose, California passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018 at the age of 96. She was born in Carmel Valley, California on December 18, 1921 to Daniel and Mary Lemos.
Mary Ann often told stories of the fun times she had growing up in Gilroy, California. Some of her happiest memories were visiting the beach in Santa Cruz with cousins; attending Portuguese celebrations in Gilroy, Hollister, Watsonville, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz; marching as Queen in the Gilroy Portuguese celebration in 1938; winning first place at her high school marching band competition in Los Angeles in 1938 and winning second place at the World’s Fair at Treasure Island in 1939. She was a proud member of the local Catholic Guild and was active in the PTA while her daughters were in school. Mary Ann loved to swim, dance, entertain family and friends in her home, spend holidays with extended family, babysit her grandchildren, and crochet. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter Diana and son-in-law Jarod Middleton of San Jose; grandson Jarod Middleton (Susan) of San Jose; granddaughter Amy Galvan of Nampa, ID; granddaughter Melissa Rocha (Jerry) of Hollister; grandson Zack Alves (Roz) of Gilroy; great-grandchildren Noah and Natalie Galvan, Lily and Jack Middleton, Violet Rocha, and Lola and Dean Alves; brothers Tony Lemos (Beverly) of Hollister, and Jim Lemos (Betty) of Waterford; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William Silva; daughter Linda Alves; siblings Alice Avila, Daniel Lemos, Adeline Lemos, and Edward Lemos; and her parents.
Services will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Darling & Fischer Garden Chapel, 471 E. Santa Clara St., San Jose. Interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 2650 Madden Ave, San Jose. In lieu of flowers, donations to Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care, 400 Race St., San Jose 95126 would be greatly appreciated.
